Welcome

Dear Parents,

I am thrilled to be working with your children this year!   I am excited to continue their growth in reading, writing, and math.   I am also looking forward to teaching them about the sun, Puget Sound beaches, force and motion, community, and much more.

Your child has a homework folder that should go home and come back daily.  Inside the folder will be a log that needs to be signed every night.  Homework will be given out M-Th.  The children are expected to read 20 minutes per night and complete the homework assignment.  Daily homework should be turned in the day after it is assigned.    I understand that lives get busy, so homework can be turned in a day or two late if your child is busy with sports etc.   We will have Fun Friday every week.  If your child has not completed his/her homework, that time will be utilized for homework completion.  If they are all finished, they get to play games, watch movies, draw, or read.  I am hoping this is a good incentive to complete homework on time.

Passwords will be sent home so that your child can practice math at home with IXL.  This is a great way to keep up on the skills we learn in class.  Another great math practice is fact dash: http://www.mhschool.com/math/2009/ca/assets/factdash.html  This game will help improve their scores for our math timings.

The children will be participating in the Accelerated Reader program.  Any book that is read to him/her or that he/she reads can be tested on as long as there is a quiz available.  The quizzes are a great teaching tool to assess whether a child comprehends what is being read.  AR quizzes can be taken shortly after arrival and during silent reading time.  I encourage the children to read picture books two times.  Chapter books need to be reviewed before taking the test. Click here http://www.arbookfind.com to check AR level and if a quiz is available.

The children have snack time M,T,Th,F afternoon at 2:45.   Most children eat something left from their lunch.  If your student buys lunch you can send a separate snack. For your child’s birthday, you are welcome to bring in a store bought treat to share with the class during snack time.  Please let me know in advance.  We currently have 21 students in our class.

If you have any questions I can be reached at mpaul@nkschools.org.  If you have bus or pick-up changes, please call the office.

During cool weather our room may get a bit chilly.  If your child likes to wear a jacket inside, please make sure it is lightweight and follows the school uniform rules.  Jackets tend to all look alike, especially the uniform ones.  Please write your child’s name inside all outerwear.

Thank you, Melissa Paul
